POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT

Title: SLDVS Graduate Assistant (multiple program-specific appointments possible)

FTE: 0.5 (20 hours weekly, during regular business hours)

Calendar: I: Summer 2014 July 16, 2014 – August 15, 2014

III: Spring 2015 January 5, 2015 – May 15, 2015

II: Fall 2014 August 16, 2014 – December 15, 2014

Position Description

The mission of SLDVS is to help students learn and serve through co-curricular opportunities designed to

cultivate awareness of community needs and inspire advocacy for social justice. This is done through the

development of personal and professional leadership skills rooted in academic foundations and unique

intellectual perspectives. The goals of the department are to work with students in co-curricular learning

experiences that will:

• Develop competencies for leadership on campus and in surrounding communities;

• Inspire growth in civic engagement from personal and professional perspectives; and

• Encourage understanding issues of social justice and advocacy for social concerns.

Graduate assistantships may be available in the department for the 2014-2015 academic year, contingent on

funding. The specific program foci of all assistantships complement each other; while there are multiple separate

positions, cross-program and cross-topic collaboration is expected, and work will overlap.

Graduate Assistants will accomplish the following tasks within the office of Student Leadership Development and

Volunteer Services (SLDVS):

• Plan, implement, assess, and evaluate large-scale leadership-oriented programs for students, including: an

annual campus leadership institute for individual students; a student organization skill-building

conference; and potential large-scale leadership conferences;

• Plan, implement, assess, and evaluate large-scale service-oriented programs for students, including:

keynote speakers and panel presentations; campus institutes and service conferences; and off-campus

service days;

• Coordinate, assess, and evaluate small-scale, weekly learning opportunities for individual students,

including: speakers series; service and civic-engagement workshops; and a calendar of regular volunteer

opportunities;

• Assist with the planning of other office- and department-wide annual events, as needed;

• Co-coordinate the University’s annual Chancellor’s Student Service and Leadership Awards (CSSLA),

from setting an annual planning calendar, coordinating the event’s advisory board, and planning for

actual event-day needs;

• Develop the University Student Ambassadors program, including research on peer institutions’

best practices, team member recruitment/selection, training, and development, and overall

branding/marketing and facilitation of the team’s involvement across the University.

• Recruit, train, advise, develop, and evaluate UIC ServiceCorps (student community-service team);

• Co-advise “Dance Marathon at UIC,” a student-designed and student-run national philanthropy program;

• Assist with recruitment, selection, training/development, and supervision of student staff within SLDVS;

• Assume responsibility for the office’s presence in social media, including its website and online-
calendar updates, Facebook and Twitter presence, and in any other forum, as appropriate;

• Serve as an expert resource, consultant, or liaison for leadership programs for professional peers, colleague

departments, and partner agencies on- and off-campus, providing outreach and collaboration, as needed;

• Lead office and program-related outreach efforts among neighboring offices/departments within Student

Affairs, at UIC, with alumni, and externally with partnering service agencies throughout Chicagoland;

• Represent SLDVS and SDS on departmental, divisional, and University committees, as assigned;

• Maintain database records, files, and historical data relevant to SLDVS programs;

• Attend SLDVS, SDS, Student Affairs, and other University programs and events, as requested; and

• Provide office coverage as scheduled, and perform other duties, as assigned.

Preferred Qualifications/Competencies

• Active, demonstrable knowledge of theoretical/practical foundations and theory related to college student

identity and leadership development, social justice awareness, and civic engagement;

• Personal experience of involvement with organizational leadership or community-service roles, especially

in a college/university campus-life setting;

• Significant practical experience with college student advising (individual and group), campus event

planning, and administrative/office management; and

• Creativity and willingness to contribute to program design, explore innovative teaching methods, and

assess student learning through short- and long-term educational interventions.

Compensation

• Graduate tuition waiver and stipend (as negotiated by the current GEO contract).
