Position Description

The Graduate Assistant, under the direction of the Associate Director of Student Development Services, will serve

the Commuter Student Resource Center. The Graduate Assistant will focus on collaboratively planning and

facilitating site services and events and have important impact on the Commuter Assistant program. Specifically,

the Graduate Assistant will:

• Coordinate and implement the programming and event production initiates of the Commuter Student

Resource Center (CSRC).

• Provide outreach to UIC student groups, colleges, and offices through presentations and consultations to

promote programs, resources, and services.

• Research current issues, literature, and resources in commuter and non-traditional student education.

• Assist the Associate Director with long- and short-term projects and initiatives.

• Assist with management of the Commuter Student Resource Center facility and daily supervision of

student staff members.

• Assist with recruiting, selecting, training, monitoring and evaluating student workers serving as office

assistants and/or peer advocates.

• Update website related to Commuter Student Resource Center programs and events.

• Provide appropriate resource referrals to students on a walk-in basis.

• Initiate and maintain contact with student organizations and university departments.

• Attend Commuter Student Resource Center events and meetings as negotiated.

• Provide office coverage as scheduled, and other duties as assigned.

Special Skills Required:

• Working knowledge (or familiarity with) of issues facing commuter students

• Event planning experience

• Experience in an administrative office setting a plus

• Strong oral and written communications skills a must

• Proven organizational skills (attention to details and manage multiple tasks)

• Ability to work independently and as a team member is expected

• Good at multitasking and with follow-through

• Comfortable speaking to groups and giving presentations

• Capable of working with a wide spectrum of diverse students

• Experience with Microsoft Office Suite, specifically Word, Excel, and Publisher

The Asian American Resource and Cultural Center (AARCC) invites applications for a 25% time Graduate Assistantship (G.A.) for the Summer, Fall, and Spring semesters 2014-2015. The stipend will be for 10 hours per week.  Students must meet the criteria outlined in the Policy on the Appointment of Graduate Assistants. The AARCC Graduate Assistant will be assigned to work with the Asian American Mentor Program (AAMP), a peer mentor program now in its 8th year.  The G.A. will assist the AARCC Director or Associate Director in supervising the staff of approximately 26 Peer Mentors in working with 60 or more first- year Asian American students at UIC.  The G.A. will also coordinate workshops and events for AAMP starting in summer for Summer College and assist with recruiting incoming 1st year students to the program for the Fall.  Additional responsibilities will include assisting the AARCC Staff with other programs related to Asian American students. Most hours will need to be in the afternoon, with rare early evening hours.
The ideal candidate will have experience coordinating student activities and workshops, leadership training, as well as with counseling, advising, or peer mentor programs.  Applicants should be well-organized, possess strong communication skills, and be able to work effectively with diverse student populations, particularly 1st generation college and Asian American students.  Preferred academic backgrounds include education, psychology, social work, or a related field.

Graphic Designer WANTED

The UIC Latino Cultural Center is looking for a Graduate Assistant (GA) or an Undergraduate Student Worker for the Spring 2014.

Project: Designing the LCC’s visuals, including posters and any advertising/promotional material for our public programs/event for the semester.
GA or Student Worker will be responsible for following our design templates and meeting design deadlines based on our public program schedule (check out our website archives to see event posters).

GA Time Allocation: 10 hours a week for 10 weeks (25% appointment)

Student Worker Time Allocations: 10 hours a week, 10 weeks ($8.75 hourly)

Starting Date: February 3, 2014

Qualifications: Student must have graphic design experience, proficiency of Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator, and show a portfolio of his/her work. Minimum 3.0 GPA required.
