As the representatives of each department to the GEO, Department Stewards are the conduits of information between individual members and the union leadership. The Stewards Council is a committee comprised of Department Stewards from all over campus. In meetings that take place about once a month, the Stewards Council provides opportunities for union members’ concerns to be heard and addressed. Additionally, each Department Steward serves as a way to reach members in her own department, getting cards signed, hosting lunches, spreading information, and gathering people together for events. The Stewards Council often collaborates with the Organizing Committee in order to help maximize attendance at union activities and spread the word about upcoming events.
Ideally, there are at least two stewards in each department on campus. If your department doesn’t have a steward, or you don’t know who your department steward is, email email@example.com and make sure that the particular needs of graduate employees in your department don’t go unnoticed!
